Organic Fruit Project

As of today, NOW has approximately 120 ha of organic certified fruit production, including: strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, peach, apricot and black currant and is expanding its area yearly. The products are processed into frozen and canned in NOW’s own processing facility.

NOW Organic started 5 years ago with the cultivation of organic strawberries. First, pilot fields were set up to find the ideal combination of planting, fertilization and crop rotation. A pest and disease monitoring program was set up to find the most occurring pests and diseases and the best method to control them organically.

One of the conclusions, for example, was that wireworms could best be controlled by intercropping the strawberries with potatoes. Local farmers became curious and NOW explained to the farmers about the possibilities of the cultivation of organic fruit and the market possibilities. Soon farmers started to follow, replacing their maize into more profitable organic strawberries.

Due to this success other farmers in the neighborhood joined the program for the cultivation of organic blackberries and raspberries. In 2007 the first organic blackberries and raspberries were processed into a frozen product. At the same time first trials were set up to get a better view on the possibilities for the cultivation of organic apricot and peach, fruits that normally need an intensive spraying program to control diseases. NOW’s agronomists and the farmers found that a better balanced organic fertilization in combination with organic plant extracts showed a fair control of the diseases. In 2009 the first village sold their organic certified peaches to NOW.

NOW continuously looks for possibilities to increase the area, the diversity of products and let farmers benefit from a sustainable situation. In the meantime NOW’s research base continues experimenting to find better organic solutions for farmers, resulting in a better income.
