Organic Ginger Project

NOW Organic has currently around 20 ha of organic ginger under cultivation. An ideal combination, of farmers with a long history of ginger cultivation and NOW with its’ organic knowledge, results in a high quality product.

In 2006, cooperation was set up for the cultivation of organic ginger with farmers who have a broad experience of growing this spice. The soil and climate in the area create ideal conditions for organic farming of ginger. In 2008 the first organic certified ginger was collected.

Besides a high nutrient demand, ginger is a relative easy crop to grow organically. Plenty of well composted animal manure in combination with soybean meal supplies enough nutrients to the crop. Some damage on the shoots is yearly caused by the stem borer. Damage is small, but in favorable conditions it can multiply rapidly causing trouble in the next year. That’s why NOW is doing research to find more suitable organic ways to control this insect.

To fulfill the increasing demand for organic ginger, NOW introduced the cultivation of ginger to its’ strawberry growers.
A rotation of ginger, a spring vegetable, and then strawberry, followed by a green manure or an autumn vegetable creates
a higher biodiversity, a better soil life and a long sustainable income for the farmers.

The crop is harvested in October and stored under the ground. The ginger is mixed with sand which creates an ideal microclimate
for storage. During sale, the product is selected under strict quality supervision, washed and dried to exact specifications, and shipped to its’ final destination.
